Galapagos penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus) are the world’s northern most penguin. Here on the equator, they are extremely reliant on the cool, nutrient rich waters of the Humboldt Current to supply them with fish. When a severe El Nino prevented this current from reaching the Galapagos in 1996, around a half of Galapagos’ penguin population was lost to starvation.
